KUALA LUMPUR, Monday [26 October 2009] – Another 529 Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad (“Bank Islam”) Al-Awfar account holders received cash prizes totalling RM175,000 for just putting their money in the Al-Awfar account. They included Encik Che A Manaf Bin Md Taib, a private sector worker from Terengganu who won the grand prize of RM100,000.

Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad Managing Director, Y.Bhg. Dato’ Sri Zukri Samat presented the prizes to the two of the top three winners today. They are Encik Che A Manaf and Y.Bhg. Dato’ Ismail Kamus. The second prize winner Encik Ammanullah Khan Bin Noor Moahamed who won RM10,000 could not attend the prize giving ceremony.

Encik Che A Manaf who works in Chukai, Terengganu has been banking with Bank Islam since 1996, was still in “shock” over his win. He said it is the best gift he has ever received.

Dato’ Ismail, who won RM5,000 said: “It sounds too good to be true! And I am so elated. I am so truly glad and surprised. I am happy that I invested in Al-Awfar.”

All 529 winners were picked by a computerised draw held on 30th September 2009 witnessed by Dato’ Dr. Ma’amor Osman from Persatuan Pengguna Islam Malaysia, Tuan Haji Munir Bin Hj. Md. Salleh from Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (JAKIM), Mohd Izwadi Mat Hassan from Bank Islam’s Shariah Department and Puan Jamaliah Abu Hassan from Bank Islam’s Operational Risk Department. The draw is in accordance with the features of the Al-Awfar product launched on 25th March 2009.

Speaking at the press conference held at Bank Islam’s Head Office, Consumer Banking Division General Manager Encik Khairul Kamarudin said that the Al-Awfar was designed with the objective of helping to create a new wave of Islamic savings and investment trend which is in line with Shariah requirements.

As at 20 October 2009, Al-Awfar has attracted a total savings and investment deposit of RM237.7 million from 65,858 accounts. The Bank expects Al-Awfar to attract total of RM300 million worth of deposits by December this year” said Encik Khairul.

Al-Awfar which means “prosperous investment” is based on the Mudharabah contract of profit sharing. It is a savings and investment account which enables account holders to save and earn profit but also offers the unique proposition of allowing them to win cash prizes of up to RM100,000, every three (3) months.

For savings account, the minimum deposit is RM100 while the minimum deposit for investment account is RM1,000 for a one-month tenure and a minimum of RM500 for a three (3) to sixty (60) months tenure.
