MRR2 in Kepong fully open

KUALA LUMPUR: The repairs on Pier 28 the Middle Ring Road 2 flyover in Kepong have been completed and all lanes are now fully open to the public, said Works Minister Datuk Mohd Zin Mohamed.

Mohd Zin gave his assurance that the MRR2 was safe to be used following an early morning incident on Aug 3 when panels fell from the Pier 28 beam onto to the road, shocking motorists and causing a massive traffic jam for several hours.

"The flyover is structurally safe although three of the 18 carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) straps from a pillar (Pier 28) snapped suddenly on Aug 3.

"Investigations and studies conducted by the Ministry's Special Task Force and the consultants from Germany confirmed that the Aug 3 incident did not affect the pillar's structure or the flyover's cross beam, nor are there any other cracks.

"I am satisfied with the work done. It is safe to be used and all six lanes are now open to the public, including heavy vehicles," he told reporters on Sunday after inspecting the flyover.

Pier 28 is located near the Kepong Komuter Station and Desa Complex. Two of the six lanes of the elevated highway were then closed to facilitate repairs.

Works to fix the tie-frame and temporary pre-stressing were completed Sunday, and would be monitored daily to prevent such incidences from recurring, he said.
