Khir Toyo raps Hishammuddin over stateless Malaysians
SHAH ALAM, May 29 — Former Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Khir Toyo criticised the Home Ministry for being slow in providing stateless Malaysians with proper birth certificates and identify cards.
“We hope that the Home Ministry and the minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein will be able to look at this issue objectively. I hope the ministry will be able to establish a special task force to help solve a problem which is at a very critical stage,” he said.
He said that Selangor Barisan Nasional (BN) compiled 5,000 cases from January 2008 and had submitted 200 applications to the Home Ministry but only 30 applications had been processed and of those, only 16 had been approved.
“I feel sad because there has not been any concrete action taken by the Home Ministry. We have compiled 5,000 cases and 10 per cent are Malays, 15 per cent are Chinese and 75 per cent are Indians,” he explained.
Khir stressed that if this problem was not solved, it would lead to a bigger social problem which will further weaken the government’s and BN’s credibility.
He also blasted former Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar for not doing enough to resolve this issue.
“I have brought this case to the supreme council and they said that they would take special action. During that time Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar was the Home Minister and I brought the issue twice to the supreme council but I didn’t get a good response,” he added.
He said that he will meet the Home Minister and the director-general of the National Registration Department and pressure them to assign special officers to resolve this problem.
Selangor BN will also set up a special task force and open a help centre in Shah Alam for Malaysians who do not have any identification papers.
“I think this issue is very important because in Selangor alone there are 5,000 cases... try to imagine how many more cases there are in Malaysia.
"This is the main reason behind many criminal acts. When these children grow up, they cannot find work because they do not have any identification and they have to resort to crime,” he said.
Khir told reporters that he felt it was his responsibility to help them because the cases involve Selangor and he was the former mentri besar.
